THE STAIRCASE 2005
Byron Hot Springs Hotel, Byron California. Built in the 1930s, used for POW interrogations during WWII. Abandoned for decades, many say it's quite haunted. It IS noisy at night in there . . . Night,full moon, dark interior, blue and red-gelled strobe flash. Canon 20D.

RED VALVES 2005
At the Hercules Powder Works, Hercules, CA, a 19th century dynamite factory. Closed in 1977, torn down and subdivided in 2006. Night, full moon, 100VS film, 3 minute exposure red-gelled flashlight. My last film shoot before going digital.

 

GRAND STAIRCASE 2007
The massive (and difficult to light) first floor lobby vestibule inside the 1917 Bethlehem Steel offices in San Francisco, CA. Made entirely of marble. Canon 20D. Night, completely dark room (except the streetlight shining on the steps through a crack in the boarded up windows), blue and red-gelled strobe flash. Minor perspective adjust in Photoshop. Built by east coast gambling interests and closed after only 2 seasons, this early 60s Googie masterpiece has stood abandoned for over 30 years. Home to thousands of pigeons. 160T film, 4 minute exposure, full moon. Available light only.

RED OCTAGON 2004
One of the abandoned houses on the hill above Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, CA. About 20 houses sat untouched and forgotten for 30 years in one of the most valuable real estate markets in the world. The entire neighborhood was torn down as part of the redevelopment of the base in 2006, even the trees and streets were removed. ESCALATOR 2000
The entrance vestibule of the spectacular Phoenix Trotting Park. Abandoned for decades, it has been the location for many films and the scene of many crimes. It's a long walk up that escalator . . . 160T film, 4 minute exposure, full moon, red-gelled strobe flash.

KITTY 2004
Dead and desiccated Siamese cat inside the Madam's home attached to Bobbie's Buckeye Bar, Tonopah, NV, an abandoned bar and whorehouse. Did the Madam go into hospital and leave her kitty to starve? Abandoned for about a year before I found it (judging by the expired liquor license), the place was unlocked and wide open that day, but on my last trip to Tonopah it was locked up tight.
